Aleutian Region Schools Virtual Job Fair - May 25

This is Alaska Teacher Placement (ATP) forum for teachers, education majors, and school administrators to discuss working and living in the state of Alaska. Those considering an Alaskan job, or considering a new Alaskan education job ask questions, and those with information and/or opinions provide answers. Although many users are teacher or principal candidates from the Lower 48, a large number of current and former school district HR and school administrators subscribe.

Mike served as a principal in Anchorage, and then as Alaska's
Commissioner of Education under two governors from 2011 until 2016.
He is currently the superintendent of both Aleutian Region School
District, and the Chugach School District. Both districts use
progressive standards-based models of education, and innovative
assessment and instructional approaches.  Chelsea Sternicki,
ARSD Business Manager, will also be online in chat to help answer
candidate questions.

The Aleutian Region School District operates three schools, including small, multi-grade K-12 schools on both Atka Island and Adak Island in the Western Aleutian Islands. The Adak School has twelve (19) students, and the Yakov E. Netsvetov School on Atka School has ten (10) students - although the student population does change a bit each year.

This is a unique opportunity for the right candidates in one of the most spectacular and interesting parts of Alaska. ARSD has two positions posted. Although not required, dual certification (Special Ed & General Education) is ideal in these small schools so that a teacher could teach regular classes, but also handle IEP duties for either of these positions. The District has well-furnished, inexpensive family housing available, pays transportation to site from Anchorage for teachers and family, and offers a competitive salary schedule.

The ARSD team is going to be talking to candidates about these positions:

Elementary Teacher - K-6 Multi-grade classroom
Generalist / Special Education - K-12 Special Education certification and/or Generalist teaching interest

Is This a Good Fit For You?

The ideal candidates for this type of setting would have some combination of the following skills and interests:

Self-starter
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to teach "out of content area" in a multi-grade classroom
Ability to adapt to a rural / isolated setting

Recruiting Incentives & Compensation

New Teacher signing bonus of $2,000 - paid this August
Head Teacher stipend of $5,000 (if indicated)
Teacher salaries starting at $50,259 (depends on experience & education - 2020 schedule, not 2021-22 SY)
9-month contract (189 instructional days from mid-August to mid-May)
Family transportation from Anchorage to Atka or Adak (teacher and family members)
Family transportation from Adak to Anchorage at end of contract
$600 / month rent (2+ bedrooms with all utilities included)
Full medical / dental / vision and audio insurance
Medical emergency evacuation (Medevac) insurance
Life insurance for all employees
Excellent support and assistance from an experienced Anchorage-based administration
