This is the new version of the Alaska Teacher Placement (ATP) forum for teachers, education majors, and school administrators to discuss working and living in the state of Alaska. Those considering an Alaskan job, or considering a new Alaskan education job ask questions, and those with information and/or opinions provide answers. Although many users are teacher or principal candidates from the Lower 48, a large number of current and former school district HR and school administrators subscribe.

Looking at a job next year in Dillingham. They don’t have teacher housing, and I’m not finding much about rentals or how much they cost. Anybody have information to share, about the school, housing, community, etc? I’ve looked online, so I already know about the travel situation. Are there cars available there, or would I need to barge one in? I appreciate any insider knowledge. I’m in Southeast, an Alaskan, but not familiar with Bristol Bay region.

Dillingham is beautiful, and has a road system. There are two districts based out of that regional hub: Dillingham City Schools, and Southwest Region School District. There is a local road system that goes out of town and in the Wood-Tikchik Lakes area. If it were me, I would want a vehicle there.

There is regularly scheduled, seasonal barge service from a few different companies, but it's not as frequent as in Southeast Alaska. I am not sure of the best place to load your vehicle from is, but for some lines it may be in Seward....here is some basic info:

Hope this helps,
