An Exciting Time of Year!

This is Alaska Teacher Placement (ATP) forum for teachers, education majors, and school administrators to discuss working and living in the state of Alaska. Those considering an Alaskan job, or considering a new Alaskan education job ask questions, and those with information and/or opinions provide answers. Although many users are teacher or principal candidates from the Lower 48, a large number of current and former school district HR and school administrators subscribe.

An Exciting Time of Year!

This is the time of year when new teachers are arriving in Anchorage or Fairbanks, and then going on to their villages and towns in rural Alaska. New teachers will have orientations and/or "New Teacher In-service" in many districts. And, new residents in rural Alaska are learning about how to shop for the Bush "guerilla shopping style", wondering what a "pixie" is, buying their first "Alaska tennis shoes", getting used to it being sunset at midnight, and, of course, Googling up a storm on how to clean a silver salmon.

Here is a nice story that just came out about one such new teacher in Ekwok (SWRSD), but the same type of tale is being repeated statewide. Oh, and they actually DO happen to need another teacher at that small school if anyone is interested.

Welcome to all, and let us know if you have any questions, OK? :ugeek:
