Transition: Teacher to Counselor

This is the new version of the Alaska Teacher Placement (ATP) forum for teachers, education majors, and school administrators to discuss working and living in the state of Alaska. Those considering an Alaskan job, or considering a new Alaskan education job ask questions, and those with information and/or opinions provide answers. Although many users are teacher or principal candidates from the Lower 48, a large number of current and former school district HR and school administrators subscribe.

Transition: Teacher to Counselor

Postby abstir6 » Wed May 20, 2020 7:08 am

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any clarification or guidance on how to make the transition from teacher to counselor.

I have my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and after eight years in the classroom would like to make the transition to guidance counselor.

I am unsure if there is an endorsement I add onto my certificate, or if I need to pursue another degree.

If anyone has any guidance or insight, thank you!

Hello,

Counselors are in high demand in Alaska. I'm not a school counselor, but my understanding is that the state requires completion of at least a Bachelor's level, accredited School Counseling program. You would want to verify this with Alaska Teacher Certification (https://education.alaska.gov/teachercertification), but here is there page on Type C certification, which includes School Counselors:

I know the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) has a School Counselor certification program at the post-bacc level, as well as a Master's Degree. It seems that if the applicant does not have a Master's in something else, the certification program track has to also include a Master's. I could be wrong. The UA system has been undergoing some program changes, so you will want to verify their program info.

Here is their Master's in School Counseling program: https://www.uaf.edu/academics/programs/ ... seling.php

The Alaska School Counselor Association lists other certification programs in Alaska here: http://www.alaskaschoolcounselor.org/page/certification-grad-schools

I imagine there are also online options, but I would verify that with Alaska's Teacher Certification office before you signed up for any program. Makes sense to go with programs that the EED folks know about, and will process most easily with online degrees.

Hope this helps,

John
