Anchorage Virtual Job Fair / ATP Live Chat This Week!

This is the new version of the Alaska Teacher Placement (ATP) forum for teachers, education majors, and school administrators to discuss working and living in the state of Alaska. Those considering an Alaskan job, or considering a new Alaskan education job ask questions, and those with information and/or opinions provide answers. Although many users are teacher or principal candidates from the Lower 48, a large number of current and former school district HR and school administrators subscribe.

Postby Johncn » Mon Feb 04, 2019 7:33 pm

Alaska school districts have begun posting jobs and interviewing candidates for the 2019-20 school year. As of this morning, there are over 325 active teaching and school administration jobs open in Alaska for next school year. Districts are posting 3-5 new jobs a day, and this will increase as their openings become known. There were 11 new jobs posted on Wednesday of this week alone.

ATP has two exciting live events next week scheduled for their Facebook page: Anchorage School District's Virtual Job Fair on Wednesday, February 6; and, ATP's first Live Chat of the 2019-20 school year job search cycle.

Anchorage School District Virtual Job Fair
Host: Amanda Graham, Recruiting & Retention Coordinator, Anchorage School District
When: Wednesday, February 6th, 3:30-5:00 pm AST (7:00 - 8:30 pm EDT)
How to Participate: ATP Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/AlaskaTeacher/

Amanda is the Recruitment and Retention Coordinator for the Anchorage School District. ASD is the largest K-12 school district in Alaska, and also provides Special Education and related services to younger children. Amanda and her team will be presenting information about working for ASD, and answering your questions that come in by Facebook chat. Anchorage is especially interested in chatting on the ATP Facebook page with teachers and related service providers in the following specialty areas:

- Special Education (all areas)
- Occupational Therapists
- Physical Therapists
- Speech & Language Pathologists
- French Immersion Teachers (Elementary)
- Japanese Immersion Teachers (High School / Elementary)

This is a great opportunity to connect directly to the HR decision makers at one of the most sought after locations in the state! Bring your questions, and tune into the ATP Facebook Live stream. This event will be recorded for archived viewing.

City life not for you? Looking for a that rural or remote "Alaska Experience"? Well, ATP has another event planned for you next Thursday:

ATP Live Chat - Living & Working in Rural Alaska
Guests: Josh and Janice Bullock, Dillingham School District
When: Thursday, February 7th, 3:00-4:30 pm AST (7:00 - 8:30 pm EDT)
How to Participate: ATP Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/AlaskaTeacher/

Josh and Janice have years of experience living and working in rural Alaska as classroom teachers, district office staff members, and in school administration roles. They have spent literally thousands of collective hours in small airplanes and helicopters in all sorts of weather, ridden across the tundra and the sea ice in sleds pulled behind snowmobiles, and hitched rides in small skiffs and the occasional walrus hide boat - all in the line of duty!

More importantly, Josh and Janice have helped many newbies transition successfully to living and working in Alaska by assisting with multiple Welcome Wagon orientation projects for new district staff members, mentoring new teachers, and assisting with the ATP Job Fairs. In addition, they both have a great sense of humor, and the rare ability to speak frankly and honestly.

Whether you have questions for Josh and Janice about how to find a job that is the right fit with a rural school district, shop for groceries efficiently, or regarding what challenges to expect when adjusting to rural life, we hope to see you at 3:00 p.m.!
