What amount should be set aside for food?

This is the new version of the Alaska Teacher Placement (ATP) forum for teachers, education majors, and school administrators to discuss working and living in the state of Alaska. Those considering an Alaskan job, or considering a new Alaskan education job ask questions, and those with information and/or opinions provide answers. Although many users are teacher or principal candidates from the Lower 48, a large number of current and former school district HR and school administrators subscribe.

What amount should be set aside for food?

I will be moving to the Alaskan bush this year and wanted to know how much money should I set aside for food for a semester? Or at least for a few weeks prior to receiving my first paycheck in September?

Depends. I would place an order with Walmart.com for some dry goods. Spend as much as you possibly can afford (our initial order was a month's supply) and then use your checked baggage allotment for meat and frozen veggies.

Where are you headed to?

My wife and I are a family of three headed out to the bush for the first time this year as well. We ordered about $2,000 worth from Walmart.com, which we expect will last us 4-5 months. I think you should order what you can, but definitely about 6 weeks worth at a minimum. That first check might not be for a month, depending on how your district sets up its payroll.
