NWAB and North Slope Health Insurance

This is the new version of the Alaska Teacher Placement (ATP) forum for teachers, education majors, and school administrators to discuss working and living in the state of Alaska. Those considering an Alaskan job, or considering a new Alaskan education job ask questions, and those with information and/or opinions provide answers. Although many users are teacher or principal candidates from the Lower 48, a large number of current and former school district HR and school administrators subscribe.

NWAB and North Slope Health Insurance

Does any one have first hand, or even second hand, knowledge of the health insurance for these 2 districts? Specifically if dependents that are in the L48 are covered and get insurance cards? What was your experience like with getting care?

I've read the negotiated agreements, websites and researched this forum for both districts and can't seem find the answer to either question. :?:

Hello,

The NWABSD health package is described on pages 74-76 of their Negotiated Agreement, and includes pretty detailed information about coverage, and does include dependents. The NWABSD website says that all dependents are covered, so that seems to be a good sign. ;-)

Although I have no first or second hand experience, as an administrator with various Alaska districts, I can say it would highly unusual for them to NOT cover your dependents, regardless of location. Families separated for work reasons is quite common in rural Alaska.

Hope this helps,

John

Thanks so much for your response. So family separation is pretty common? That actually gives me a little bit of hope because our family won't be alone in this experience. They'll be joining me months later but this distance will be a big adjustment.
